Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her grandmother Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay was a child living with family members in Compton, spent each summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage in the house of a member of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
